Playing it safe during COVID-19 restrictions

We are delighted to confirm that, from 13th May, Government advice allows all forms of watersports – including paddle boarding – to go ahead. That’s great news if you want to get back on the water. However if you do plan to head out on the water, we urge you to take care and follow these simple rules:

  • Plan ahead – check weather conditions, especially wind speed and direction and tides. If possible avoid paddling in open water like the ocean and stick to quite inland waterways where you are less likely to get into trouble and put pressure on services such as the RNLI, HM Coastguard or NHS services.
  • Check that you are allowed to launch and recover at access and exit points – not all slipways or beaches are currently open. If in doubt contact your local harbour master office.
  • If possible do not paddle board on your own. You can paddle with other members of your household only, if no one in your group is displaying COVID-19 symptons.
  • Alternatively you can paddle with one other person not from your household but you must apply social distancing at all times.
  • Apply all normal sensible safety precautions and always wear a leash and/or bouyancy aid.
  • Dress appropiately, remember even though we are having nice weather, cold water shock is still a possibility if you fall in at this time of year.
  • Remember to tell someone if you are heading out on the water. Tell them where you are padling to and from and how long you intend to stay out.
  • Carry some form of communication e.g. a phone in a dry-bag and check you have phone reception where you are intending to paddle.
  • Know your own paddling abilities – don’t venture too far unless you are confident in your fitness ability and experience.

Have fun and stay safe everyone.

See you on the water.

The Waterborn Team.
