PADDLE AND PICK

Protecting what we care about

The Kingsbridge to Salcombe estuary is unusual because it has no large river feeding it, just a series of small streams fed from local springs. Instead, the estuary is shaped by tides that reach as far up as Kingsbridge twice a day. This makes the estuary an internationally important maritime and intertidal habitat and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Every day we are reminded about how beautiful yet fragile the estuary and the surrounding rivers and coastlines are. So we never take the local ecology for granted. We are proud to be a governing member of the ‘Plastic Free Kingsbridge’ committee – part of the initiative by Surfers Against Sewage to take action to cut avoidable plastic waste.

We also conduct Eco Tours that combine scenic SUP trips with collecting any rubbish spotted. Paddle and Pick sessions are typically run once a month, all our rubbish collected is processed by Till the Coast is Clear, they in turn Upcycle, Recycle and produce energy this these items.

Stand up paddle boarding is very much an eco sport and it’s up to us to protect the environment we are blessed with. That’s why we run Paddle and Pick events throughout the year to help rid the estuary and the ocean that feeds it of litter.

These events are very social and are suitable for anyone who can SUP independently. We can supply a board or you can use your own but everyone will be given a litter collection box and a hand-held litter grab to attach to their board.

We normally run Paddle and Pick session once a month. Check our event calendar for dates.

We want to encourage as many SUP users as possible to join our mission of clearing our waterways of litter. If any of your friends have a SUP, get them involved and help us make a change right now!

Post a photo of you and your litter collection on your SUP (once you are ashore and safe) on our Facebook page, Twitter feed, or Instagram page and use #PickitSUP and @WaterbornSUP with your photo and location
